FAQ: Post-Secondary Studies

Interested in our Post-Secondary Studies, but still unsure about something? Then you are in the right place! Here you can find answers to the most frequently asked questions relating to this type of course.

What is meant by ‘student status‘ and as a student on the course would I be entitled to it?

Student status gets you state social support, health insurance, tax relief and other perks. Every student, who signs up to one of our post-secondary courses immediately following their final exam, may claim this status. If you graduated more than one year ago (e.g. you have already completed a year of university) then unfortunately by law you are not entitled to student status.

I want to apply to a Post-Secondary course . What do I have to do for it?

If you want to apply to the course, you must firstly fill out the application form and pay the course fees. The application must be filled in online on our webstie or in person at the school office. Courses fees should be paid no later than 3 days before the start of the course and the exact amount is in accordance with the current price list, found on our website.

Can you pay the course fees in instalments?

Yes, you can pay the course fees in two instalments of 12 200 Czech Crowns. The first instalment must be paid no later than 3 days before the start of the course. The second must then be paid by the end of 2019. However, paying in instalments is not part of the first minute sales.

I only want to apply for half a year. Can I?

Unfortunately, no. There is only a year long course, which must be completed and payed for in it’s entirety. That means, if you decided to divide the course fees into two parts, then you must pay both, even for whatever reason you decide not to continue the course in the second half.

When I’m on a post secondary course, do I have to attend?

Yes, like in secondary school, you have to attend the post-secondary course that you are on. You are only allowed to miss 30% of the course. If your attendance is lower than this, then we have the right to remove you from the course and without any entitlement to reimbursement.

Are textbooks included in the cost of the course?

No, students must buy their own textbooks.

Can I change the lesson time?

Yes and no. Although you can tell us at what time you want lesson, we are not obligated to satisfy this demand. Although we will try our best to accommodate your needs, we cannot accommodate everything. The composition of a particular class is designed to primarily accommodate the language level of the students and the amount of classrooms available. Consequently, the student’s preference is last on the list of priorities. Dissatisfaction with lesson timings and the course are therefore not valid reasons for a student to claim a reimbursement of the course fees.

What exams are used on a Post-Secondary course?

Students on a Post Secondary course at PELICAN Language School can take a State Language Exam (B2), General Language Exam (C1) or alternatively a B1 Level Exam. If enough interest is shown, students will also be able to prepare elements from the Cambridge Exams. None of these exams are obligatory and are not included in the course price.

I heard that when I apply to a Post Secondary course I get another language for free. How does this work?

Correct! Alongside your daily language studies as a present from us you get another language course free. You can chose from English, German, French, Spanish and Russian language courses. This course takes place once a week in the evening and you can come by yourself or bring another person.

I applied to a Post-Secondary course and paid the course fees but unfortunately I will no longer be able to attend the course. Can I claim back the course fees?

It depends on the reason as to why you cannot attend the course. According to the School Rules you may claim back the course fees in full only if you cannot attend the course due to serious health reasons (supported with a letter from the doctors) or you have been accepted into university (again must be supported by a letter from the university). If your reason is different from the two exceptions stated (e.g. moving house, work commitments and so on) then you will not be entitled to a reimbursement of the course fees.

I’ve got onto a Post-Secondary course, however I am not satisfied with the lesson times. Can I cancel my application and get a reimbursement of the course fees?

Unfortunately, dissatisfaction with the course you are on, according to the school rules, is not a valid reason to cancel your application and claim a reimbursement of the course fees. If you have any reservations about the organisation or the lesson timings, or alternatively with the attitude of the teacher, then you can resolve the problem with them at the school office. We will do our best to make sure that any problems are resolved and that you are satisfied with the lesson timings.
